Calibration update of the COMBO-17 CDFS catalogue
We present an update to the photometric calibration of the COMBO-17 catalogue
on the Extended Chandra Deep Field South, which is now consistent with the
GaBoDS and MUSYC catalogues. As a result, photometric redshifts become slightly
more accurate, with <0.01 rms and little bias in the delta_z/(1+z) of galaxies
with R<21 and of QSOs with R<24. With increasing photon noise the rms of
galaxies reaches 0.02 for R<23 and 0.035 at R~23.5. Consequences for the

Progress on testing Lorentz symmetry with MICROSCOPE
The Weak Equivalence Principle (WEP) and the local Lorentz invariance (LLI)
are two major assumptions of General Relativity (GR). The MICROSCOPE mission,
currently operating, will perform a test of the WEP with a precision of
. The data will also be analysed at SYRTE for the purposes of a LLI
test realised in collaboration with J. Tasson (Carleton College, Minnesota) and
Q. Bailey (Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Arizona). This study will be
performed in a general framework, called the Standard Model Extension (SME),
describing Lorentz violations that could appear at Planck scale (
GeV). The SME allows us to derive a Lorentz violating observable designed for
the MICROSCOPE experiment and to search for possible deviations from LLI in the
differential acceleration of the test masses
Anomalous Hall effect in the noncollinear antiferromagnet Mn5Si3
Metallic antiferromagnets with noncollinear orientation of magnetic moments
provide a playground for investigating spin-dependent transport properties by
analysis of the anomalous Hall effect. The intermetallic compound Mn5Si3 is an
intinerant antiferromagnet with collinear and noncollinear magnetic structures
due to Mn atoms on two inequivalent lattice sites. Here, magnetotransport
measurements on polycrystalline thin films and a single crystal are reported.
In all samples, an additional contribution to the anomalous Hall effect
attributed to the noncollinear arrangment of magnetic moments is observed.
Furthermore, an additional magnetic phase between the noncollinear and
collinear regimes above a metamagnetic transition is resolved in the single
crystal by the anomalous Hall effect.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure
Supersymmetric features of the Maxwell fish-eye lens
We provide a supersymmetric analysis of the Maxwell fisheye (MF) wave problem
at zero energy. Working in the so-called sector, we obtain the
corresponding superpartner (fermionic) MF effective potential within Witten's

The Wolf effect and the Redshift of Quasars
We consider a simple model, based on currently accepted models for active
galactic nuclei, for a quasi-stellar object (QSO or ``quasar'') and examine the
influence that correlation- induced spectral changes (``The Wolf Effect'') may

Object Classification in Astronomical Multi-Color Surveys
We present a photometric method for identifying stars, galaxies and quasars
in multi-color surveys, which uses a library of >65000 color templates. The
method aims for extracting the information content of object colors in a
statistically correct way and performs a classification as well as a redshift
estimation for galaxies and quasars in a unified approach. For the redshift
estimation, we use an advanced version of the MEV estimator which determines
the redshift error from the redshift dependent probability density function.
The method was originally developed for the CADIS survey, where we checked
its performance by spectroscopy. The method provides high reliability (6 errors
among 151 objects with R<24), especially for quasar selection, and redshifts
accurate within sigma ~ 0.03 for galaxies and sigma ~ 0.1 for quasars.
We compare a few model surveys using the same telescope time but different
sets of broad-band and medium-band filters. Their performance is investigated
by Monte-Carlo simulations as well as by analytic evaluation in terms of
classification and redshift estimation. In practice, medium-band surveys show
superior performance. Finally, we discuss the relevance of color calibration
and derive important conclusions for the issues of library design and choice of
filters. The calibration accuracy poses strong constraints on an accurate
classification, and is most critical for surveys with few, broad and deeply
exposed filters, but less severe for many, narrow and less deep filters.Comment: 21 pages including 10 figures. Accepted for publication in Astronomy

Hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) as a Resource for Green Cosmetics: Yield of Seeds and Fatty Acids Composition of 20 Varieties under the Growing Conditions of Organic Farming in Austria
The interest in hemp (non-drug Cannabis sativa L.) for skin care and cosmetic use is due to the high content of oil, especially unsaturated fatty acids in seed with technological and therapeutic effects. In a field trial on an organic farm, seed weight and content of fatty acids of 20 hemp varieties were surveyed on three different harvest dates. The dry matter seed yields ranged from 27-149 g m2. The varieties Ferimon-12, Fedora-19, and Bialobreszie produced high seed yields on all three harvest dates but yields were not significantly different from a large group of other varieties. Contents of palmitic acid range from 3.1 to 4.1%, of stearic acid from 0.1 to 1.9%, of oleic acid from 3.7 to 9.2%, of linoleic acid from 44.8 to 60.2%, of α-linolenic acid from 18.2 to 27.4%, and of γ-linolenic acid from 1.6 to 4.7%. The genotype has no significant influence on fatty acid content. All 20 varieties tested show high quantities of fatty acid depending on the harvest date, so that no variety can be favored. Results confirm that hemp is a very good source of fatty acids for skin care and cosmetic use
Spin polarization of light atoms in jellium: Detailed electronic structures
We revisit the problem of the spontaneous magnetization of an {\em sp}
impurity atom in a simple metal host. The main features of interest are: (i)
Formation of the spherical spin density/charge density wave around the
impurity; (ii) Considerable decrease in the size of the pseudoatom in the
spin-polarized state as compared with the paramagnetic one, and (iii) Relevance
of the electron affinity of the isolated atom to this spin polarization, which
is clarified by tracing the transformation of the pseudoatom into an isolated
negative ion in the low-density limit of the enveloping electron gas.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, accepted to Phys. Rev.
Distant galaxy clusters in the COSMOS field found by HIROCS
We present the first high-redshift galaxy cluster candidate sample from the
HIROCS survey found in the COSMOS field. It results from a combination of
public COSMOS with proprietary H-band data on a 0.66 square degree part of the
COSMOS field and comprises 12 candidates in the redshift range 1.23 < z < 1.55.
We find an increasing fraction of blue cluster members with increasing
redshift. Many of the blue and even some of the reddest member galaxies exhibit
